Yale Hosts Conference on
World Economy in the Next Century
New Haven, Conn. -- Reporters are invited to a three-day immersion in current
economic issues at Yale University this weekend, when the Graduate School department of
economics hosts a reunion conference, April 16-18.
Topics to be covered at "The World Economy in the 21st Century" conference
are:
Economic Development, Economic Growth and International Trade
The United States Economy
Are We in a Global Economic Crisis?
Labor and Capital Markets
Economic History: What Does It Have to Teach Us?
Innovation, Technological Progress and Competition
Panelists and speakers are all graduates of the Yale doctoral program who have gone on
to distinguished careers. They include Janet Yellen, chair of the Council of
Economic Advisers to the President; Edwin Truman and Edward Gramlich of the
Federal Reserve System; Jose Antonio Ocampo, United Nations Economic Commission for
Latin America and the Caribbean; Van Doorn Ooms, Committee for Economic
Development; Nancy Birdsall, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Thomas
Synnot III, U.S. Trust Company of New York; and William Cline, Institute of
International Finance.
Yale faculty participants include University President Richard C. Levin,
economics department Chairman T.N. Srinivasan, Director of the Yale Center for
International and Area Studies Gustav Ranis, and professors William Brainard,
Koichi Hamada, Jenny Hunt, Paul MacAvoy, Giuseppe Moscarini
and Christopher Udry. All but Moscarini are graduates of Yale.
International academic experts include Yale alumni who are now faculty members of the
universities of Sao Paulo (Brazil), Lisbon, Toronto, and Cambridge. American participants
include professors from M.I.T., the universities of California (Berkeley), Chicago,
Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, plus Brown, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern
universities, and Williams College.
Yellen will deliver a keynote address on April 16, at the 7 p.m. dinner. Ocampo will
deliver formal remarks during the April 17 lunch, which begins at 12:30 p.m. Levin will
give a keynote address on April 17, after the 6:30 dinner. Journalists who wish to attend
any of these events must make prior arrangements with the Office of Public Affairs.
