Yale President to Give Public Talk on
"Democracy and the Market"
New Haven, Conn. -- Yale University President Richard C. Levin will give a
public talk on "Democracy and the Market" at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6 in
the University's Battell Chapel at the corner of Elm and College streets.
Levin's talk is part of "Democratic Vistas," a group of lectures by
distinguished Yale faculty members established to celebrate the 300th anniversary of
Yale's founding in 1701. The talks are part of a Yale undergraduate course that is open to
the public.
The president's talk will explore how the market economy both encourages and
discourages democratic values, and how market forces at odds with democratic values might
be countered without sacrificing economic efficiency and freedom.
On Thursday, February 8, also at 4 p.m. in Battell Chapel, Yale Law School Dean Anthony Kronman will
host a public discussion with Levin about the issues raised in his talk.
Levin, a specialist in the economics of technological change, is the Frederick William
Beinecke Professor of Economics. He joined the
Yale faculty in 1974 and became president in 1993.
