Gustav Ranis reappointed as Henry R. Luce Director
of YCIAS
Gustav Ranis has been reappointed as the Henry R. Luce Director of the Yale Center for
International and Area Studies (YCIAS), announced President Richard C. Levin.
Ranis, who is also the Frank Altschul Professor of International Economics, will begin
his new two-year term on July 1.
As YCIAS director, Ranis heads one of the University's principal gateways to the world.
Established in 1961, the center comprises 20 councils, committees, programs and special
initiatives. It brings together faculty and scholars from across the campus to promote
interdisciplinary research on issues affecting people around the globe. It offers majors
in African, East Asian, Latin American, Russian and East Asian studies, as well as an
international studies double major and a major in ethnicity, race and migration.
YCIAS also sponsors public lectures, conferences and workshops; provides fellowships
for travel, research and study abroad; and provides information to educators, business
people and the media through its Programs in International Educational Resources (PIER)
outreach program.
In addition to serving as a consultant to numerous international organizations and
developing countries, Ranis was director of the Pakistan Institute of Development
Economics 19591961 and director of the Economic Growth Center at Yale
19671975. He served as assistant administrator for program and policy in the U.S.
Agency for International Development 19651967. In 1976 he organized the U.S.
National Academy of Sciences' Bicentennial Symposium on the Role of Science and Technology
in Economic Development.
Ranis has held fellowships and visiting professorships at universities throughout the
world, and has written extensively on theoretical and policy-related issues of
development. |
